More than 11% increase in turnover thanks to international growth

Ulm, January 2020. In 2019, ulrich medical and its subsidiaries generated turnover totaling around €100 million, thus perpetuating the company’s steady growth curve for the eleventh year running. With strategic investments to expand production and employee capacities at its site in Ulm, the renowned medical technology manufacturer – which specializes in contrast media injectors and spinal systems – has equipped itself for future challenges in the industry and reinforced its position as an attractive employer in the region.

“2019 was one of ulrich medical’s most successful fiscal years, which is great. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of the entire workforce, we were able to increase our turnover by more than 11% compared to the previous year. Personally, I’m very proud of this result, which I see as impressive confirmation of our innovation strategy in recent years,” reports Christoph Ulrich, managing partner of ulrich medical. In this connection, one milestone in 2019 was the approval and introduction of ulrich medical’s contrast media injectors to the USA, which is the world’s largest market for medical technology products.

Ongoing international growth

“For several years, we have been growing very successfully with our American subsidiary in the Spinal Systems business division. The market launch of contrast media injectors on the US market was the logical next step in our business development strategy and will enable us to continue growing internationally in double figures,” explains Klaus Kiesel, CEO of ulrich medical. Although Germany itself – followed by Europe as a whole – remains ulrich medical’s largest market, international activities are growing at a disproportionate rate. The company now supplies its contrast media injectors and spinal systems to more than 60 countries around the world. The export rate is currently 70%, which is roughly 5% higher than the average for the industry, as the latest BVMed (German Medical Technology Association)[1] statistics show.

Besides pursuing its internationalization and specialization goals in 2019, the company also focused on preparing for the EU MDR (Medical Device Regulation) which comes into force in 2020. This will replace previous regulations for medical devices and involves numerous major changes for medical technology manufacturers. “It’s really going to shake up the industry, but we’re well prepared,” Ulrich reports. He is positive and confident that the company is well equipped to face the future – “thanks to our history of success, our experience and our passion for innovation.”

A clear commitment to Ulm

Likewise, the development of ulrich medical as an attractive employer has been one of sustained success. Within just ten years, the workforce in the well-established, Ulm-based company has grown from 200 to 400 employees. Around seventy new employees joined the company in 2019 alone. In the coming years, the company has every intention of expanding its role as a stalwart employer for the region, with a clear commitment to “Made in Germany” production at the Ulm site. In this context, the innovation strategy includes first plans to expand production capacities and office space at the Ulm site.
